A Black Dude's Take on the GT Series

I can still remember the day I got the first Gran Turismo for PSone. I remember thinking to myself, how interesting it was that a driving game would have 2 discs. At that point there had been plenty of multi disc games but a driving game with multiple discs was unheard of. My dad had taken my brother and I to the mall and my brother was old enough to have a job so he bought all of our games which was extremely awesome. My dad was even kind enough to buy us a driving wheel from CompUSA which wasn't like him, but he wanted to play it too. Now my parents were known for not buying video games for us as they thought they were a waste of money. But this was Turis (as I refer to all Gran Turismo games as), and Turis has the power to pull anyone in.

I had a blast with the game, not realizing it had so much material in it. At first I only played Arcade mode, because I didn't really understand what career was all about. When I finally dove into it, it wouldn't let me go. I had NO idea what I was doing. Throwing random parts onto cars and most of the time making them worse but it was fun. I "taught" my cousin how to hook up his cars and now he's in school to be an auto mechanic. That had nothing to do with me, as I still have no idea what I'm doing when I try to modify a car. My love affair with the first Turis ended when the 2nd one came out. I don't know what it was, I just enjoyed the format of the first one that I just couldn't get into the 2nd which is a shame because I was so jonesin for it.

The 3rd was a step back in terms of content but felt like a return to my first love. I loved that game more than anything else at the time. The game came out when I worked at Gamestop (fuck those guys) and I remember Nick coming over to play it after work because he had pre ordered the PS2 GT3 bundle which didn't arrive until the next day. When Turis 4 came out, I was kind of not motivated to play it. I loved it though but I feel at that time, I wasn't really into driving games. Also my PS2 was broken so I didn't get it when it came out, but I did pick it up a few months later.

It's interesting because my PS3 has been broken for over a year and I'll be trading in mad games to pick up a new one today so that I can play Turis 5 on the 24th. I've been known to like the odd numbered Turis' than the even ones. Needless to say, I'm extremely excited since its been such a long wait and I don't like Forza because to me Forza is like the Go Bots and Turis is like Transformers if that makes any sense. I look forward to really getting into this version as I have more understanding of cars now thanks to Nick. With Nick, I'll be publishing what takes place in my career for the world to see even though I know no one cares.

  1. i never played the first turis, and the second is the only one where i saw the game through to completion. i loved the third and damn near had an inappropriate relationship with the 4th. i will say that i seem to like the even numbered games better.

oh, and that go bots v transformers line killed me. fuck the go bots.
