more updates

http://www.gtplanet.net/yamauchi-on-gt5s-mechanical-damage-updates-more/

basically, the reason i've never seen damage is because they hadn't released the patch yet. head tracking doesn't work unless you're playing in arcade (which begs the question as to why they bothered including it at all) and some more stuff will be coming in the future. i'm fine with constantly updating a game, as long as it's free. it makes perfect sense for a company like polyphony which is never happy with a released product.

i am concerned with the fact that i can't get gt5 to talk with my psp so i can dl the five cars i bought, the one time i played gt psp. i'm going to google it and see if i can find an answer. maybe it's one more thing that i'll be able to do whenever polyphony decides to get around with it. who knew it was much more important to include shitty wwii german transport vehicles instead of working on making the game do what it's supposed to. ah, the mind of an obsessive japanese man...

*edit: my 07 sti suffered damage during a b-spec race. i'd like to say that all premium cars take damage, but my rx-8 doesn't. maybe because it's a want-to-be rally car?

more editing: there appears to be damage on all types of cars, you just really have to bash the fuck out of a car multiple times for it to show up. one retarded b-spec driver is usually enough to get the job done.

i played with a few of the modes

i got around to toying with the track editor and while it's a little odd in some ways, it's completely fucking awesome. i did about 5 minutes of actual track editing and a little over 15 minutes worth of test drives and ended up with a track that i'm completely happy with. it's challenging and technical in some areas with high speed corners in others and it has one long straight that lets me get some use out of top gear. i picked the tuscony map and narrowed the road so it was a bit more challenging. if it didn't take 4 minutes to complete a lap, i would use it to tune cars, because it has a little bit of everything. it did, however, shed light on how much i couldn't stand the terminal understeer in my rx-8, and forced me to back of the rebound a notch. now it tucks in perfectly and only understeers when i've gone into a corner way to hot. i'll easily make at least five tracks of varying difficulty in the future.

i futzed with the photo mode as well, and i love it. it's nothing different than gt4, and it's a bit cumbersome to get the angle you want some times, but ultimately it's pretty awesome. i'll probably take a picture of each of my favourite cars and post them over time. being able to export them to the xmb is also fantastic. my current ps3 wallpaper is the image attached.

i can't think of a witty title

there's a new update for turis. apparently, it fixes a lot of the online issues i would know nothing about because i haven't even looked at the online part yet. to be fair, i didn't play fortza 3 online for the first 6 months, because i hate racing people i don't know.

i also gave b-spec a run through. it's awesome. better than it was in the 4th game. it's both unbelievably frustrating and incredibly rewarding, all at the same time. b is going to be throwing up a comprehensive write up, so i wont give away too much, but a-spec, i'm lvl 7, b-spec i'm lvl 5. it gets that much playing time.

i also downloaded the 5 free cars i got for buying the collectors edition. they're tasteful and i'm glad to have them. i haven't driven any of them yet, but i hope they are stock. i got a shelby cobra, v10 audi r8, tarted up bmw m3, gulwing merc and lp640 lambo.

while i'm writing this, the demo started playing and it was a rainy track that looked like the wangan from tokyo xtreme racer. if they have a wangan track, i'm going to be the happiest guy in the world. anyone who has ever played txr has always wanted it to be ore like turis, and vise verse.

okay, that's all, go back to playing.

what does what

i was dialing the suspension on the 91 civic si i won and thought i would go over what the different adjustments do, in case you didn't know.

ride height- by lowering the center of gravity you can improve handling. the nice thing about video games is that you can over lower a car and not pay any of the nasty geometry affects that you do in real life. what's even nicer about turis is that there doesn't seem to be any loss of suspension stroke penalty, so you can lower at will. it affects aerodynamics more than anything else, and if you lower it too much, your car just isn't as slippery.

spring rate- spring rate is very important in gt5, as it seems to affect the balance of the car more than any other suspension mod. they're tricky to set up because too much can cause bad handling and too little can do the same. some general rules of thumb are too much front spring and you get understeer; too much rear spring, oversteer. i will, in a lot of cases use the internet to pilfer spring rates. mostly from kw (who stopped publishing their spring rates), tein (if i'm desperate) and progress (them guys is awesome).

dampers- dampers, most commonly called shocks or struts, control the movement of the spring. springs should control car movement, not dampers. for the sports suspension, you get one adjustment and it is three way adjustable (1-3, not compression, rebound, highspeed damping) front and rear. damper adjustment has similar affects as spring rate in that too much in the front can create understeer, too much in the rear, oversteer. when you buy the racing suspension, it gets a little trick because they add extension (rebound) and compression adjustment. by adjusting compression you are setting how much the damper resists being squished. you want less compression than you think you do, but not too little. extension is more of a "feel" kind of thing. you want to set this higher than compression and then test drive. if the front feels sluggish, bump it up. front rebound makes for faster turn in until you over do it, and then it just understeers. rear rebound makes the rear more responsive at turn in. too much can cause it to rotate out from under you at the end of a turn, causing corner exit oversteer. really annoying.

anti-roll bars- also known as sway bars, anti-roll bars (arns) do just that: they resist roll. they have no affect on dive or squat (forward or rearward movement) like a spring does, but they reduce side roll a great deal. in turis, a stiffer front bar adds a little bit of steering feel, but can cause understeer. a stiffer rear bar causes the rear to come around faster. these are great for adjusting balance on a car and they're less complex to adjust than springs and dampers. there are two thoughts on arbs. one is to run really stiff springs and smaller arbs, allowing the springs to do most of the work. two, the chapman method as i like to call it, is to run softer springs and larger arbs. try both and see what you like better.

camber- if you are looking straight ahead at a car, camber would be the angle created by moving the top of the tire in towards the car, or out away from the car. moving the top in towards the car is called negative camber, and positive camber is pretty useless for racing cars, so turis doesn't even allow you to use it. the more negative camber in the front, the more grip it has, until you over do it. same with the rear. while camber increases grip, it causes a loss of traction for accelerating and braking. tracks with mostly straights will benefit from less camber, a track with more turns will benefit from more camber. on rwd cars i start with -2* front and rear and adjust until i'm happy with the balance. for fwd and awd i start with -2* front, -1* rear. once i'm happy with the balance i run it on tracks and slowly increase the amount of camber until i start to run slower times. then i set it to my fastest time on that track. if i'm lazy, i just leave it at whatever it was adjusted from after i was happy with the balance and just run that on every track.

toe- toe is if you were looking straight ahead at a car and the tires either pinched in, or flared out like duck feet. here's where turis gets stupid, and always has. toe in, which is where the tire pinch in towards the center, is negative in the real world. in turis, it's positive. it's really annoying. since this is a turis blog, i'll explain what they do in turis lingo, but just kow that in real like, it's the opposite. negative toe in front will increase turn in response at a loss for straight line stability. negative toe in the rear will make you crash. except in rally where it will help the rear of the car rotate quicker. positive toe in the front will numb turn in response a little and provide greater straight line stability. it's a good thing to do on twitchy cars. positive toe in the rear will keep the rear of the car from coming around as quickly. rwd cars can benefit from this. toe is a pretty sensitive thing, and adjusting out to 1* in either direction is a big change. i start with .25* and more in whatever direction is needed in smaller increments. most of my cars have 0 toe front and rear.

so there you have it. my word explanation of what does what. i didn't give you lot of specifics because it varies from car to car, so play with things, ask people what they're using, even ask me if you'd like. i'm pretty open about sharing my settings, unlike most people.

okay, lets do this shit

12:08a: b got his copy from walmart. it will tell you it takes 20mins to install, but we hung on the last 2 seconds for 5 minutes. install time was 47 minutes. do yourself a favour and skip the opening movie. no one cares about that shit, and it's probably one of the reasons it took so long for the game to be "finished." oh, speaking of finished, no turis game is ever finished. the shit has some issues that let you know that they didn't use any of the past 6 years to polish the game. standard cars look garbage, but still look more realistic than fortza (a game i absolutely love, by the way). with three pointers, i helped b bring his laptime on ss5 down by a considerable margin. he's hooked.

9:30a: i woke up, fed my stupid cats and moved my car so my wife could go to work. turis hasn't been delivered yet. i'm going to get breakfast and run an errand and we'll see if it's here when i get back.

10:36a: i'm playing civ revolution. no game yet, but it is in transit.

12:52p: package has been in transit since 8:15a this morning. from king of prussia. to give you an idea of how close that is, i will be going there for lunch. it's five fucking minutes away. when i get back from lunch, if it's not here, i'm going down to b's place and stealing his (what? you're at work, homey).

1:12p: told you k.o.p. was close. still no turis. however, winding road magazine just sent me an email with the title "gran turismo 5 is here!" first off, no, no it isn't. secondly, how the fuck would they know? they're in michigan.

1:43p: got b's copy from his apt. it's installing now.

1:53p: wheel is set up. i'm not sure of what polyphony's idea of "approximately" is, but it's been cooking for 10mins and it still has "approximately" 20mins to go. fucking clown shoes.

1:58p: hey, does anyone watch "better of ted"? great show. surprisingly funny. i think my favourite line may be "i love they dutch, that's why i hold them to a higher standard." in context, that's comedy gold right there.

2:05p: japanese math is terrible. it's been 22mins and it says i now how 16 minutes left. no wonder we beat them in the war. sheesh!

2:14p: 4mins left. i'm watching this kick-ass documentary about shangri-la on history international. it's narrated by leonard nimoy.

2:21p: okay, done

2:23p: fuck the opening movie. it's car buying time!

2:31p: just changed the options. it takes forever for this game to load. it's almost as bad as fortza 3.

2:41p: bought a white 1st gen miata. i'm going to do a bunch of warm up laps around tsukuba to get used to the game.

2:56p: okay, so the slow load times are because the game never installed to the hard drive. i sat there for however fucking long that was and the game never installed. it's now telling me i have to wait 50 more minutes to play my game if i want to install it. seriously, what the fuck polyphony?

3:09p: the clutch works. it's throwing me off. i like i though. oh, my copy of the game still has not been delivered. i'm never ordering from amazon for a launch day game again.

3:25p: sunday cup-done. i really wish they would have races dependent upon engine size or other rules other than fr/ff/4wd kind of races.

3:51p: i thought the miata understeered a tiny bit when in long sweeps, so i bought a front lip for the car. i was going to just buy the racing suspension and go to town, but i want to enjoy this car as close as stock for as long as i can. it's really well balanced now.

4:03p: world compact car race-done. cape ring track is awesome! it's fairly technical but when you string it together perfectly, you can carry so much speed through sweepers. perfect for a momentum car like the miata. tons of fun like a fat chick.

4:09p: just hit lvl 3. also, my miata needs power, but i don't want to ruin the balance. i guess it's time for tires and suspension too.

4:20p: i ended up ust balancing the engine and upgrading engine management. 130hp, 2068lbs. not bad.

4:25p: my copy just got here. i'm going to install it (for real this time) and take a doosey of a twosey. that should easily kill an hour.

5:38p: i took a look at the datalogger because i'm a big fucking dork, and it's going to be helpful, i just wish you could do more with it. i'll elaborate at a later time. i may even dedicate an entire post to it.

5:51p: carting is very realistic. if you could add the smell, and impact pain, it would be the same experience. the steering wheel is all over the place because of the bumps and the reflexes you need when flying of of curbs is crazy. i may spend more time doing this than playing a spec.

6:17p: unlocked the amateur races by reaching lvl 5. just bought the height/damper adjustable suspension because i was curious about what i could adjust and how those changes would affect handling. also, after the power mods i made, balance was ruined on the car.

6:30p: height/damper adjustable suspension gives you limited "soft" spring rates to play with, height adjustability, 3 way adjustable dampers, and camber adjustment. roll bars are not adjustable but set at 1 f/r with toe defaulting to a non adjustable 0f/.2 in for the rear. i left the ride height alone, set the from springs at 5kg/mm f, 3kg/mm r. dampers i settled on 2f/3r with -2*f/-1.8*r for the camber. it's balanced and pretty quick. i'm not sure if i'll buy the racing suspension for the car or not for this car.

6:47p: don't race in the rain if you've never practiced in it. it's really hard to see, you have more grip than you would think, but things can get ugly in a hurry.

8:24p: ran some errands and then ate dinner, and b came over. he's driving my miata on suzuka as we speak. i ended up dropping the damping front and rear by one because the car was sluggish on turn in. the car handles much better. the balance is now closer to stock (which in the miatas case, is a very good thing) but the levels of grip are much higher, even with the same tires.

8:49p: b is driving my kart around tsukuba. he's so addicted to this game; it's awesome. i think he might drop the loot for a logitec. yes, with the wheel, this game is that fucking good.

10:20p: i bought a vitz (premium version) and it's a real shit show. to make it fast, i will have to sink a ton of money into it, and i don't want to do that. it's acceptable at the moment, but it understeers relentlessly. in the future i might buy a racing suspention for this car as well, and go all out and try to make it like a club car, but right now, i just want to earn some cash so i can buy the an older car so i can beat beginner. oh, and this is the last time i'm posting tonight. live blog is over. thank you b and kev for reading any of it.

i've seriously thought about live blogging tomorrow

as much as i hate live blogging, i think i might do it tomorrow, just because i know that no one will be reading it. that's funny to me. it doesn't take much for me to laugh though, as i'm kind of an idiot. so, look forward to the one sided text message that will be me, live blogging my fun with gt5.

A Black Dude's Take on the GT Series

I can still remember the day I got the first Gran Turismo for PSone. I remember thinking to myself, how interesting it was that a driving game would have 2 discs. At that point there had been plenty of multi disc games but a driving game with multiple discs was unheard of. My dad had taken my brother and I to the mall and my brother was old enough to have a job so he bought all of our games which was extremely awesome. My dad was even kind enough to buy us a driving wheel from CompUSA which wasn't like him, but he wanted to play it too. Now my parents were known for not buying video games for us as they thought they were a waste of money. But this was Turis (as I refer to all Gran Turismo games as), and Turis has the power to pull anyone in.

I had a blast with the game, not realizing it had so much material in it. At first I only played Arcade mode, because I didn't really understand what career was all about. When I finally dove into it, it wouldn't let me go. I had NO idea what I was doing. Throwing random parts onto cars and most of the time making them worse but it was fun. I "taught" my cousin how to hook up his cars and now he's in school to be an auto mechanic. That had nothing to do with me, as I still have no idea what I'm doing when I try to modify a car. My love affair with the first Turis ended when the 2nd one came out. I don't know what it was, I just enjoyed the format of the first one that I just couldn't get into the 2nd which is a shame because I was so jonesin for it.

The 3rd was a step back in terms of content but felt like a return to my first love. I loved that game more than anything else at the time. The game came out when I worked at Gamestop (fuck those guys) and I remember Nick coming over to play it after work because he had pre ordered the PS2 GT3 bundle which didn't arrive until the next day. When Turis 4 came out, I was kind of not motivated to play it. I loved it though but I feel at that time, I wasn't really into driving games. Also my PS2 was broken so I didn't get it when it came out, but I did pick it up a few months later.

It's interesting because my PS3 has been broken for over a year and I'll be trading in mad games to pick up a new one today so that I can play Turis 5 on the 24th. I've been known to like the odd numbered Turis' than the even ones. Needless to say, I'm extremely excited since its been such a long wait and I don't like Forza because to me Forza is like the Go Bots and Turis is like Transformers if that makes any sense. I look forward to really getting into this version as I have more understanding of cars now thanks to Nick. With Nick, I'll be publishing what takes place in my career for the world to see even though I know no one cares.

croatian bloke gets advanced copy; writes informative but boring updates

title kind of says it all. some croatian dude got an advanced copy of the game and is writing about what's new and what's not, on gtplanet. (http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=132738) i plan on doing something similar, but not nearly as boring. seriously, i haven't even finished reading what he has up because it's making me ready for nap time. i'm going to take a walk, buy some doughnuts and then take another stab at it.

but, before i do, i wanted to let the 2 of you who read this know that one of you, b, has been given permission to write. he didn't do anything special, just came up with the whole idea for the blog. if this blog goes anywhere, and other people want to write, just know that you're going to have to do something pretty impressive to earn that right. until then, you need to shut the fuck up when grown folks is talkin'. yes, i constructed 2/3 of this paragraph just so i could use that line. it really should have stopped after i barely introduced b.

you sick son of a bitch

here's a video some fan made because gt5 has twisted his mind to think about nothing else.

i love when fan videos are edited by people who know how to edit. it makes me want to make a video about something i love until i remember how lazy i am and how i don't feel like staying late at work to cut my own shit.

this game is never coming out

hi! welcome to my blog about gran turismo 5. if you're looking for information about the game, or anything useful at all, please go some place else. i promise you nothing informative or useful to anyone will accompany any of my posts.

this blog was created because my best friend knows that i love me some driving sims, and he wanted me to blog about my experience for some fucking reason. so here we are. i have nothing better to do and if you're reading this, you don't either.

on nov. 2nd 2010 gran turismo was supposed to release. but sony quickly put an end to that. if you're a big fan of the franchise, this would not be devastating to you. you're used to polyphony and sony bending your enthusiasm for the game over the arm of a couch and fucking it in the ass with a dildo in the shape of a fist full of cash. it's just what they do. this time around, however, they've had a year long love affair with your anus, with constant videos of a seemingly finished game, with absolutely no end in sight. it is now the 15th of november and the current release date is the 24 of this month. i'm assured, by everyone i know who cares enough about video games to go to websites and read all about them, that the game is definitely coming out on this date, but i still don't believe it. am i jaded? you bet. but until that fucker is in my hands, i wont believe it. shit, amazon has had to give me free shipping twice now because sony keeps changing the release date.

so keep toying with us sony. you've killed all my enthusiasm for the game and left me in an emotional state of limbo. i just looked at my cat, and i don't care if he lives or dies. as for you readers, now a bit more depressed, look forward to posts with pictures and possibly some video in the future.
